Metaphysical Poets: Study Guide

The term metaphysical poets were not an organized establish group of poets—instead Samuel Johnson used the term to describe a loose group of 17th-century English poets. What most distinguishes them is the use of what has been called the conceit: a surprising and unlikely comparison between two very unlike things or people that do not have a clear-cut relationship between each other.
