Practice: Constructing Introductions

In this practice, you rearrange sentences to create a reasonable introduction, and then reformat the text using your preferred word-processing software:

  1. Be sure to read the chapter on introductions.
  2. Select one of the items beow, copy the text, and paste it into your preferred word-processing software.
  3. Rearrange the sentences to create a reasonable introduction, remember that while content of introductions varies, the sequence is roughly:
    1. topic: just a word or phrase
    2. background: just a sentence or two
    3. purpose: What's the document for
    4. audience: who can read this document
    5. overview: the parts of the document
    6. scope: what the document does not cover
  4. Paragraphing is up to you—two paragraphs may work.
  5. Create a title heading at the of the introduction you construct. Here's an example:
Report on Advances in Front-End Technologies
  6. Name this file beginning with some identifiable part of your name followed by _introductions, and e-mail it to your instructor.
  7. You are welcome to work on another item—or all of them.
